Contemplation Space BK
balancing the appropriate with the atmospheric
Since most of us stopped praying, we might lack a ritual of contemplation and retreat in our daily routines. For our buzzing workplaces, universities and transportation hubs we forgot to build contemporary ‘churches’ meeting the new demands. In our highly-paced and sometimes overstimulating society, contemplation spaces are one thing that slows us down and puts us back on our feet again.
A contemplation space is not something religious. It is a space for contemplation, rest, meditation, prayer, self-reflection and retreat. This space can be used in a broad variety of ways, and by a lot of different people. It is accessible to all, religious or non-religious, providing in the broad demands of our modern diverse society. As everyone is welcome and equal, atheists, meditators, Buddhists, Christians, Muslims, Hinduists, Jews, secularists, neurodivergents, people with autism, and ADHD, as well as peace or quietness seekers and whoever else wants to spend time here, are welcome.
In 2022, a student showed me the current self-initiated prayer space at a dead-end stairway at the Faculty of Architecture, while a variety of students submitted a signed petition urging the desire for a place to pray, contemplate and retreat. Then, I decided to take this into my own hands and see creating an adequate space
The BK Contemplation Space is a self-initiated research and development project advising the TU Delft Faculty of Architecture on the necessity, desires and essentials of a contemplation space.
