Living Cycles

Today, 1,400 children younger than five years old died from diarrhoeal diseases. And so will tomorrow.

Diarrhoeal disease is the second leading cause of death in children under five. It is both preventable and treatable.

Each Living Cycles compound provides sanitation, drinking water and energy for at least 150 children in developing countries. The compound is a semi-finished, ready-to-assemble construction kit and is clad by the locals to build belonging, adapt to local demands and keep production costs low.

Currently, (2023) the first unit is being built in India. Hopefully many will follow.

Love Bubbles

Love Bubbles is a 21-hour love and wellness experience, based in the Dutch Achterhoek. The design for the Steltenberg balances intimate and atmospheric interiors with a more traditional architecture fitting the bocage landscape.

The three Love Bubbles (Gaia, Odin and Diamond) in the Steltenberg are entirely distinct in ambience, matching their stories and love rituals.

Jaffa Park

What is your favourite place to sit down and think? We all have this one place, where we can settle in and do very little for a moment. For some people, this can be a place of worship, for others enjoying their coffee or gazing out of the window. We should admit, we all need it. Though employers or universities barely offer such spaces, while these might be the very places where we desire contemplation the most. Therefore, I extensively researched places of contemplation. How would you desire to shape your contemplation space at work, at university, or at a train station?

BK Contemplation Space

When a variety of students submitted a signed petition urging the desire for a place to pray, contemplate and retreat, I decided to take this as a challenge. The BK contemplation space is a self-initiated research and development project advising the TU Delft faculty of Architecture on the necessity, desires and essentials of a contemplation space.

Olfactory

What would architecture look like if it would embody smell? Olfactory is a proposal for a scent museum. It is an embodiment of the intangible, smooth nature of scents. Spaces come and go, almost unnotably. Walls and floors guide you flowingly. Transitioning from indoor to outdoor gradually and without a clear notion. Spiralling seemingly infinite through slight disorientation in a kaleidoscope of space. Guided unforcefully, you’ll explore what smell looks like.

SC010

Human based, data driven, open building. The sustainable and human scaled identity of the University of Applied Sport Sciences, supports an inclusive community. It is composed of broad data about grid-sizes, ceiling height, average spans, the degree of possibilities for a free lay-out and the carbon dioxide equivalent. SC010 facilitates a separation of the support and the infill. Here through it is adaptable, flexible, demountable and circular. This maximizes the lifespan and minimizes the ecological footprint. SC010 is adaptable and able to change its main function. Over and over again.

Jorn Beltman

Although I am trained as an architect, my fascination is much broader. I enjoy human idiosyncrasies, cultural diversity and bizarre adventures. Without a concrete plan, staying in Buddhist monasteries or East Indian prisons, I explore the world. I combine uninhibited creativity and delicate design with scientific research and futuristic, radical ways of thinking. My work should be impactful and impressive, and above all create a strong, unforgettable experience.
